Abstract Fluorescence imaging is widely used for study of the structures and functions of biological systems without perturbing them. However, the poor penetration limits in vivo applications. Two-photon fluorescence (TPF) imaging can overcome this limitation and allow imaging of living tissue up to about one millimeter in depth, which has great potentials to track biological processes and interactions of chemicals with living subjects. The molecular structure can significantly affect the performance of TPF materials. In this talk, I will introduce the design strategy of TPF probes and discuss a variety of applications in imaging and sensing.
